Santa Cruz Textile Arts Guild

The purpose of the Santa Cruz Textile Art’s Guild is to encourage the fiber arts, exchange weaving, spinning, and dyeing ideas and promote the spirit of friendly cooperation among those who practice the various fiber arts.

The Guild meets on the second Wednesday of the month, usually in the Aptos Village Park Club House, September through June (no meeting in December). The annual schedule of meetings includes both sharing meetings and program meetings. Visitors are always welcome to attend. Visit the Home page for more detail. Visit Programs to see descriptions of past programs.

The September meeting is often special meeting at the fairgrounds during the Santa Cruz County Fair in Watsonville in years when the fair opens on the second Wednesday of September. Many guild members will be participating each day at the fair in the handspinning and handweaving area of the Yesterday's Farm located in the Agricultural History section of the fairgrounds. Check our home page close to September for information. Members participate in exhibits at the Fair and demonstrate spinning and weaving techniques.

The Guild sponsors a special lecture, the Nora Rogers Memorial Fiber Arts Lecture, each January instead of having a regular meeting. This program is held on a Saturday at the Museum of Art and History, Santa Cruz, CA. The funding is provided by the Heritage Fund of the Guild.

Membership dues are $35 per year, payable at the September meeting. Associate or fixed income memberships are available for $20 per year. Sustaining memberships are available for over $35 per year. Couple/family memberships are available for $40 per year. If you wish to become a member, speak with the membership chair at a meeting or use the Contact Us page to email.

The Guild no longer publishes a newsletter. We send a weekly email to members with current updates and notices of events, shows and other items that may be of interest to the membership. If you would like to send information to the guild membership please email us through the Contact Us page.

Each year the Guild publishes a membership roster, which provides contact information for members of the guild. This roster is now published as a pdf file and email to the membership at intervals during the year when there are changes in the membership.

A Guild library is housed at Martha Stanley's studio, and available to all Guild members for browsing and borrowing. Contact the guild librarian, Yonat Michaelov, or Martha with donations and questions. Use the Contact Us page to make queries by email.

The Santa Cruz Handweavers Guild maintains a Heritage Fund, whose purpose is to further handweaving within the Santa Cruz Guild and the larger community. The Heritage Fund Committee accepts donations on behalf of the Guild. Use the Contact Us page to contact the Guild President by email.

The Heritage Fund is available to support special programs not otherwise accessible to the Guild such as the Guild library, outreach in the community, school demonstrations, and grants and scholarships for programs and projects that expand the boundaries of the craft. Some examples are: seed money for classes, publications and workshops, purchase of equipment for Guild purposes and awards of excellence in various fiber venues.

Our Anne Blinks Textile Study Collection consists of study samples of techniques Anne pursued over her weaving lifetime, 1949-1995. Seven members of the Guild have documented the Collection and study boxes are available for a small fee to be borrowed for up to three months. For more information visit the Anne Blinks Collection pages of this website .

We keep an archive of activities of the guild and its members: participation in exhibits, photos from special events and workshops, newspaper articles, CNCH participation, etc. Our archives go back to the beginnings of the guild in the 1940's. Contact our historian, Laura Rider, directly or use the Contact Us page to make queries by email.

A Rug Study Group meets the Friday of the week following the Guild meeting, at 9:30 am at Martha Stanley's studio. For information contact Martha or use the Contact Us page to email.

The Braids Study Group meets at irregular intervals. All weavers of narrow wares, at any level of experience, are welcome. Use the Contact Us page to email.
